Helên Thomas is a prize-winning performance poet who is both versatile and original. Helên’s first taste of poetic success came in 1985 when she was a prize-winner in 'She' Magazine's National Poetry Competition with 'Ode To Bad Poetry'.
In October 2000 she won the Manchester Poetry Festival Slam.
She has performed at a range of venues including schools, libraries, tents, a canal barge, an ancient historical monument, lots of pubs, an inflatable peach and the occasional theatre.
She has wowed audiences from Borders books to the Bowery Club New York; from folk clubs to fringe festivals; from rural Cheshire to racy Reading. Special guest appearances include: The Edinburgh Fringe Festival; The Buxton Fringe Festival; Manchester Poetry Festival; The Bristol Poetry Festival; The Poetry Tent at Glastonbury; Chloe Poems’ ‘Wham bang Thank you Mam’ @ The Green Room, Manchester; The Ashton Court Festival, Bristol; The Lymm Festival; The Cheltenham Festival of Literature; The South Kensington Festival Stars of Slam; Big Mouth Cabaret, Bristol; Mouthtrap Cabaret, Reading; Rossendale Folk Festival; Jim Bennett’s Poetry Open Mic. at Border’s Books; The Castle Bar, Cardigan, and The Bowery Poetry Club New York.
Helên has organised events for Warrington’s Hot Wire Events and The Lymm Festival. She was actively involved in Warrington Community Press, which produced two publications one of which was ‘The Hotwire Slam Anthology’. She was commissioned to write a ten-minute performance poem to commemorate five years of The Lymm Festival; she has helped to judge the festival’s creative writing competition on three occasions.
In 2004 Helên devised a piece of performance for children called ‘We Are Poets’ along with primary school teacher Kate McGann. In the roles of Penelope Page and Gabby Mouth, Helên and Kate have provided workshops and performances to a numerous schools to critical acclaim. 'We Are Poets!' are no more but Helên still performs her poems and delivers workshops in primary schools as a solo stand up poet. See www.helendthomas.co.uk for details.
In 2003 Helên donated poems to a ground breaking e-book edited by Todd Swift, ‘100 Poets Against the War’ which went down in history as the fasted assembled poetry anthology of all time. This was later followed by, ‘Times New Roman’; ‘Poems for Lord Hutton’ and ‘Babylon Burning 9/11 Five Years On’. All are free to download from http://www.nthposition.com
The site also includes some of Helên’s poetry on its regular poetry pages:

(Chloe Poems)
"Helên Thomas is a proven performance poet with a broad and incisive repertoire and the happy knack of saying the right thing at the right time for the right audience – whether they know it or not."
(Paul Neads, Editor of 'The Ugly Tree' Flapjack Press.)
"Helên Thomas is one of the UK's very best performance poets - and a witty, crafty, formally inventive writer for the page, as well.”
(Todd Swift. Editor of ‘Shortfuse: The Global Anthology of New Fusion Poetry’ Rattapallax Press, 2002)
“Helên Thomas’ irreverent style and soft-sound intonations were spot on as she served up snack after snack of poetic fare.”
(‘Literally Speaking’, Cheltenham Festival of Literature 2002)
“Look out for the poems on domestic items which are beautifully timed.”
(The List, Edinburgh)
“One of the Northwest’s funniest, LOUDEST and most original poets!”
(Buxton Fringe Festival)
"As good as dancing round your handbag to the sparkle of a glitterball. Helên Thomas is as high octane as a girls’ night out with karaoke, sponsored by Stella. Helên successfully engages her audience with everyday musings on the world so that you're left thinking - I wish I'd said that. Read, listen, but most of all enjoy."
(Rosemary Dun, poet and promoter of Big Mouth Cabaret, Bristol.)
“I think you are going to be the world’s greatest poem writer in the whole wild world.”
“I love your poems so much, I think you deserve a treat.”

(Jim Bennett, Managing Editor of The Poetry Kit)
"This book of young people’s verse will have your sprogs agog with humour, both cheeky and endearing. The right side of risky and just a little frisky, ‘We Are Poets!’ by Helên Thomas promises mirth and learning from the offset."

Hi again Helen,
And thanks for stopping by "genesis."
The YouTube idea sounds great. I think, if you don't mind me suggesting, that you could do a convincing and effective short movie for this - on a virtually-zero budget.
If it was done as a straight monologue to camera, almost like a cookery programme with a few props. Say farmhouse-type kitchen, wooden table, mixing bowls, various jars of herbs/spices etc, pestle and mortar, cookery books and the between-verse glass of wine routine, you could have something really original and entertaining.
Just a thought, but I'd like to see it!
Regards,
A.E.
p.s. I followed the link on your blog - well impressive!
Hi Anthony. Thanks for listening and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed the audio. I was especially pleased to see that it raised a smile - that's always good! It's funny but I've been toying with the idea of sticking it on youtube, just with a picture not a video, although I think the word 'poetry' still puts a lot of people off listening to certain things. I'm very pleased that it raised a smile whilst being tucked away on here anyway!
Hi Helen,
I'm so glad I stopped by to listen to your audio track. It kept me enthralled and smiling all the way through. It's incredibly well conceived, written, read and put together. You should be justifiably proud!
Shame it's hidden away here, more people should hear it . . .
Regards,
A.E.

Hooray ! - Seasons to Taste, I think it is my favourite y'know... It seems to sound a lot better on here than on other sites... have you been re-noodling... it's making my tummy rumble...
Hi Helen,
I was very interested to see your youtube performance - what a shame about the awful weather. I was chatting to a friend of mine yesterday - she organises The Plough Prize poetry competition. This is run from an Arts Centre local to me. This year they have extended the competition to include poetry written for children. As there don't seem to be many of these opportunties I thought (as an obviously keen and experienced advocate of this particular genre) you might be interested. You can find the details here:
http://www.theploughprize.co.uk/
http://www.theploughprize.co.uk/Poem%20for%20Children.html
I hope this might be helpful.
Regards,
A.E.
From a childhood that I hated one of the few good memories was scabby knees. I enjoyed picking them off and the scabs and scars were good evidence of having been out on my bike and climbing trees.
Lovely rhythm with a fine feel for the scan of the poem. Great.
Hi Helen,
Thanks for your comments on "moving on." I hate coning to your page and reading down your long list of credits - it makes me very envious. (But also full of admiration.) Now I am going to storm off in a very juvenile fit of pique.
Sneering regards,
A.E.

Hi Helen,
thanks for your comment on 'pigeon-holed.'
You're right, some of us are no better at treating people as they deserve to be treated. Humanely.
Janet.x
Thank you - I may wear it on a T-shirt to the next gig - if I can find a handbag to match. I really like scabby knees - picking is definately the way forward.

Thanks for your comments Helen. What you said about Errata justifies my intentions. It was meant to be uncomfortable reading. I consider my poetry to be a failure if it does not provoke a debate, or at least, a reaction. I was moved to write it on seing a photo of young men and women coming down the steps of Bahgdad university dressed in clothing that resembled that of my youth of the seventies (-god that's a long time ago!). the photo was accompanied by stories of abuse, rape and murder on all sides of the political divide in Iraq -how sad and angry it makes me feel -what have we done? I just hope that Pres. Obama achieves some good for America and for the world. We Are Poets sounds like a great project -those children have the world in their hands!
Hi Helen,
And thanks for your generous comments on " . . not the only fruit." As to whether it works in a slam, I'm ashamed to say I have no idea - I have never done or even attended a slam! We don't seem to have such things here in the wild and wooly westcountry. I have read it at an open mike night though, and it's an absolute swine to read. Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your work.
A.E.
Thanks for your calculator poem comments Helen. Yes I like the word Sozzle, I think its a sort of happy friendly drunkedness. And Googlize is a word now been used on line would you believe. the second poem has better words and glad you liked the end (incidentally I just changed the last word from boggled after it was posted up, gobbled fits far better) Keep a look out I may be able to squeeze on or two out of the limited vocabulary available. Thanks again. Winston
Thanks Tomas - you've got even more extra bits on your name than I have - sorry for omitting it in this instance - If you get chance check out some of the poetry on the links above. As ever, feedback of all hues is most welcome provided that it's constructive!
All the best
HT (I can't do my circumflex here either so I'm signing off with my
initials.)

Ha ha! That's an excellent idea Anthony. Funnily enough, Owen who did the music, does a range of fake revolting tins and foods that he used to mock up for comic effect and sell. We were talking about doing spoof cookery vids! I think you're right, it could be very funny especially if I can perfect a Delia voice!
I think adding audio to poems on here works well - I listened to your poem 'bay 3' as well. I don't really like reading stuff on screen (don't own a tablet and PC screen never seems to lend itself to reading poetry). I find the audio really adds to the enjoyment of reading the poem - especially with the sound effects bringing extra atmosphere - it sort of cements the words home, if that makes sense.
