Biography

Sophie is an Anarchist and a Luddite.

Her poetic ramblings are the words of a soul attempting to understand these self-revelations whilst clinging desperately to her love of hi-spec mountain bikes and CSI...

Sophie doesn't copyright any of her creative work because none of those words belonged to her in the first place and you can find more of her poetry at:
www.theabsurd.co.uk or www.myspace.com/theabsurduk

But in the fashion of a true hypocrite Sophie is selling other words at www.sophiemckeand.com

Sophie was never particularly political until the state decided that the mass fingerprinting of children was a good idea. So if you don't see her on street corners spouting poetic nonsense she's probably on other street corners running her local NO2ID stall www.no2id.net and harassing local politicians.

Samples

The Emperor's New Clothes

The crowd waved.
Street after street
paved with promises
delivered by him,
or them.
Does it matter?

And others
saw
false truths
fall like rain
into the gutter.

Dreams trimmed
around his grand
posterior,
the people chorused
'hallelujah!'

And others
knew
he was just
a man,
naked,
and vain.

The meek shall inherit the earth

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5)
Matthew decreed, that the weak,
the ‘feeble,’ those that cause no trouble
will sit in heaven at god’s side
deride us ‘mortal’ folk
yoked together under the watchful eye
of the ‘very first ever’ Big Brother.

The meek shall inherit the earth!
The sanctimonious, ‘all hail to god’ pious,
pretentious people pointing fingers
with a fake virtue so hypocritical
you wonder how they can sleep
at night.

Petty bureaucracies feeding sleaze
to tabloid nations brought to their knees
by those not brave enough to speak.
Oh yes, the meek, shall inherit the earth.

And as we drown in legislation
tidal waves of social devastation
watch the ruination of this great multicultural nation -
the meek devise greater laws
no pause, of thought, as walls spring forth.
Embattled neighbours build barriers of hate
- encouraged by the meek -
too weak, too entrenched in fear
and a “we don’t want your sort round here” attitude
that heralds the fascist’s birth.
Jesus was right - the meek truly have inherited the earth.

Ancestry.

The Tree kneels.
Feeble roots feel
through thick earth.
No richness.
No sunlight heals
this sick heart
that rots
away.
Karma replays old
days
in ways
you could never have
imagined.

If you could,
would
you change?

No
fate decrees
we fall.

Paranoia

Paranoia deceives.
Feeds empty thoughts
bloated with unfounded
fears
of those sat near,
or who hear your thoughts.

Should I no longer
speak my mind?
Allow contrition to become
the definition of my ‘self?’
To not speak
To not think
To not exist
except as I am told?
There lies obliteration
Not the promised absolution
of my soul.

Should I fear
Ideas? These thoughts that
Enter my mind from the aether?
Should I bow my head
allow word unsaid
to fester and rot?
Do they not
have as much right to freedom?

Subterfuge is for the weak.
Speak your mind.
Let your mouth form words
of freedom
alien
to the ears of the
thought police
whose only strengths
lie deep
in your paranoia.

To the Self-Deceiver

Fascists like you are feeble
and old,
hold, onto ideals
that will exist no more
as Nature
takes her course.

She breathes in.
She breathes out.

Can you comprehend
such truths
as you bend and
twist clever words
around a soul
so tight it
devours
all light?

In The End,
there is only your mind
and its tattered thoughts
that flatter,
and lie.

Untitled

The wind blows.
Black crows scatter,
spatter the night sky.
The evening’s bonfire
embers died,
as did the bride
“and all who sailed in her”
Said the man who mourned
her loss
her life
who would tear down the sky
to set things right.

Could she not foresee,
such passion
ignited
by the laughter
of the crows?

Hi Soph,

What an introduction you have and what a great philosophy. Your sample work is very moving for me having had a recent issue in my life that infringed my civil liberty and human rights by a state machine. More power to your ink and thanks for your enthusiasm.

Hi Sophie - Thanks for your comments, contrary to popular belief I really am a sensitve, insecure, overweight, boring, inanimate old twot. I know, I know - that's hard to believe. I'm glad that some people appreciate the shat that goes on in my humble napper.

Loving the samples and the blog entries. Most of the time I'm laughing because I can see some folks getting really steamed up about some of the concepts your offering. I thought they were presented with satyrical humor. Now to wander into MySpace and sign up!

Hello Sophie

Many thanks for your positive words about my 'How Queer' poem. Sorry that it's taken so long for me to respond!

I really get 'Big Brother Lives'. It's a great poem, really captures the absurdity of being subject to the whims of the state and all of its machines.

It suggests to me that a lot of our so-called freedoms are actually prescribed to us by the very people who fear the concept - probably because they'd be found out as the parasites they are.

Still, it brought to mind a saying my granddad used to say - he escaped to the UK from Poland during the war...
"Freedom is the sound a dog makes barking on the moon."

Cheers again.
Steve

The sad truth is that with bigger schools and rougher schools, there is a need to tab kids. How else will they figure out which kid out of some 750 did something, unless its fingerprinted?

Village constables in the past had less possible suspects!!!

We should of course move towards smaller schools, but things are not working that way.

Sophie,
Aren't you just lovely. Thanks for your kind comments on my stuff.
And I think your stuff is pretty cool. There's a playfulness with the words that I like a lot, and yet which highlights the seriousness of the message.
And your website is v.impressive. I want one. I've only just glanced at it though, so haven't yet read all the words there. I look forward to doing so. I will tomorrow. It's better than actually teaching the kids infront of me: I'll set them a mock exam to do or sumpfink.

I want to get into performing my stuff, and plan to go to some open mics. Perhaps we'll bump into each other one day.

Hey sweetie, thanks for your comments - I appear not to have been ousted yet?! But I stick by my original decision - I'm sorry I've not been in touch sooner but my daughter had a second brain heamorhage on the 9th of March and was critical and in intensive care for two weeks - she has come out of the coma and is making a good recovery but she was paralysed down her left side - she has gained some movement but needs to stay in the hospital as she isn't mobile and needs intensive rehab - she had to have another op to remove the blood clot and she needs further surgery to treat the AVM which is causing the bleeding but thats weeks away yet - hey ho she smiling and laughing through it all - as the beautiful person she is, I'm very lucky to have been blessed with her.
lots of love to you.

Hi Sophie,
Wow! Such passion...it shines off of the page. So much different from my own work - I'm glad I came by to read it.
...I've stopped shopping in Tesco's by the way - not for personal data harvesting reasons (they're all up to that) but because of the book "Tescopolis".
I hope that the evil men won't succeed on the back of the good men staying silent...

Hi Sophie - I came to say farewell and thanks. Our joint hero Percy Byshe Shelley said that poets are the legislators of the world, this I believe to be true. I don't belong in a place where you are congratulated for espousing hatred towards children and poor people and challenged and criticised for speaking against it. If we would only have had some supporters then I may have wish to stay, as you have said debate is important but there are far too many in the 'right' corner for me.
It's been great getting to know you and I hope you will keep in touch with me via email.

Re your poem - To the self deceiver and the lines

Can you comprehend

Great lines, they reminded me so much of someone I used to know. Luckily it was a long time ago.

Hi Daniel,

thanks so much for reading my stuff, you are very kind! It's actually an 'anti-god' piece - i am exploring the idea that god does not exist except for in the minds of men, we created him - not the other way round, and our love for this creation of ours is killing us, because god is not part of Nature, he is an abberation of Nature...
for me that leap of faith is an uacceptable one, i would rather believe in the Natural world around me, that is real...
but then that's just my view!
cheers

Hello Sophie,

All writers like to hear from others how the write has been received. I do a lot of comments as I do believe they help a lot!
Thank you for visiting with me on my page. You are always welcome to keep in touch. And I must tell you that I love the site. It is very nice and relaxing here no competitions whatsoever. Been to few sites, and not all will be of the same nature. People here are really genuine. Being a writer myself - appreciate each comment, even few words makes a big difference, it shows that people care. To me it is a lot as I do CARE for all my friends/Poets and Poetess.
Word it is an ART. Therefore we need to promote the beauty for the generations to come. Some day when our journey is done there will be people perhaps reading our words...Who knows?

I hope the Internet will retain the words in those Mega Servers...???

Have a great Sunday. See you again.
Thinking of you...Zuzanna xx

Hello Sophie

Thank you for stopping by leaving great comment. I am the kind of person I want all of you succeeded, mean every word! It is a great joy to read the written art and comment on... I love poetry. In my early age still in junior High quite often was taken part in plays when I had to memorize the entire play. Since then there was always that desire to write. I wished to get to know more of the poets in this lovely site.
Only by commenting we can find out what others think of particular written piece, therefore it is important to do so. I am sure you agree with me.

Have a great week, and see you again.
Thank you...Zuzanna

Hi Sophie

Beautiful poetry from a beautiful poet. Your words shine out from the page, creating light by which we can all get warm.

I love the way you do not accept, but equally I am in awe by the way you accept...with wit and grace.

I've not got that much of a submissive personality, I like to be dominant.

Erm, so yes, I'm accepting work through for Issue 5 due out March 2008. We are also attaching a dvd rom with videos, audio, art, etc on, so if you have anything like that, or know anyone interested...
Look forward to receiving!

hello Sophie,

Thank you for reading Eating Disorder -- a strange subject for music theatre but probably necessary. Both Laura, the composer, and myself have it -- you never really recover. It's a strange thing. It's a way of thinking that causes it, not the urge to slim. Oddly enough, my godmother died from it when I was very young. Hi ho. And how's the world with you -- The Absurdist is looking wonderful and reading boldly and searingly.

Hi Darren! oh am not sure of the ettiquet of these things... am i supposed to reply to this on your profile or here on mine? oh the joys of fragmented postmodern communication eh?
am i complex?.. i aim for easy understanding, maybe i try so hard to achieve it that i come out the other side into total obscureness!... you see i even had to look up the word orthography!! ah well... i am now going to copy this and paste it onto your profile so that i have covered all bases (it does seem a little labourous though, don't you think?... bring back the poetry review site... i knew where i stood with that.. and where everything was!)

Hi Sophie, your complexity is endearing. When are we going to see some more, riding bareback on the horse of orthography?
